Yowza.
I got one of my "Unscattering" manuscripts back today from a dear friend. My friend, who shall remain nameless and sexless, really tore into it. Among her/his criticisms:
- "Reads as if you are still so close to these events that you don't know how they fit together yet."
- "Using pet endearments as names does not work."
- His/her repeated crossing out of my lyrical, introspective passages with the note in the margin of "show me don't tell me".
While some of her/his suggestions are magnificent, a lot of them really seem like he/she wants to see this as an entirely different book.
In the midst of my stinging, I'm questioning a lot of what I've done and am doing with this book — which is good.
I'll ponder this some more as I get up again, brush myself off and continue on my journey.
