Grandma's Last Grace

Thursday 04/07/2005 10:35 AM

Don't panic on me now — nothing drastic happened. Grandma went home today.

My father-in-law, George, Sr., and his new bride, Shirley, arrived yesterday, and Grandma made delicious meatloaf (seriously, it was great) for everybody. Not thinking we'd have dinner as early as we did (about 5PM), I got tied up in a little poker tournament (which I won) and ended up being late for dinner out on the back porch.

Everyone else was finished and chatting as the early evening sun hung low in the sky. Once we cleared a spot at the table and they all shifted their chairs so I could sit next to her, I asked Grandma to say grace for me. She was happy to comply.

She and I held hands as she said her meal prayer (she's finally remembering to include Sheriff in the list of things for which she's thankful). As she finished, I added, "And Lord, thanks for the two back-to-back straights late in my poker game." There was a slight chuckle at the table and Grandma gave me a stern look.

"What?" I replied, "There's no commandment against gambling."

She scowled at me again.

"C'mon, Grandma. You tell me where it says, THOU SHALT NOT BET THE OPEN-ENDED STRAIGHT DRAW."

She finally cracked a smile and I went about my dinner. It was wonderful.

She left this morning.

We'll get back to cemeteries tomorrow.
