The Death Dealer

Tuesday 04/21/2009 7:46 AM

The Death Dealer is one of Frank Frazetta's most well-known paintings. The reasons it is so well known include the fact that it was used as the cover of Molly Hatchet's first album as well as the fact that it is the most bad-ass piece of artwork in the history of the universe (past, present and future).

No doubt, my mom and dad will instantly recognize this painting. When I was about fourteen, I had my sights set on the ultimate Christmas present: A black polo shirt with this painting airbrushed on the back. The airbrushing alone cost about fifty bucks, a princely sum in those days. When my parents finally decided to grant me my wish, we ran into an unexpected complication: The airbrush artist in the mall needed a copy of The Death Dealer in order to airbrush it onto the shirt. There wasn't any room in my budget to buy a copy of the album, so I politely asked the record store upstairs if they could let me borrow a copy of the Molly Hatchet album for the afternoon so my shirt could get painted.

Yes, in case you're curious, this is the same record store where I worked as a senior in high school. By the time I got there it was called Hastings Records, but back when I got my shirt it was Disc Records.

They granted my request and I got the most bad-ass golf shirt any teenager has ever had. The next morning when I got out bed I was at least two inches taller and had hair in parts of my body where I didn't think I'd ever see any hair. There was a swagger in my step and women trembled in my presence. In short, that shirt changed my life.

I wish I could remember what happened to it. I can't believe I'd get rid of it or throw it away, but I haven't seen it in decades.

I'm bringing all this up for a reason, but you'll have to wait until tomorrow.
