Dark Night of the Soul

Monday 05/18/2009 5:48 PM

Danger Mouse rose to fame by slaving away for months on an album he knew could never be released commercially: A mash-up of The Beatles' White Album and rapper Jay-Z's Black Album. His album was called, not surprisingly, The Grey Album and it was a critical success that was downloaded many hundreds of thousands of times.

His new album is full of original material and is called Dark Night of the Soul. It runs a wide gamut of genres and for reasons yet unexplained Danger Mouse has run into a problem with his record label and it is not clear if/when the album will ever be officially released.

In the meantime he has setup a web site for the album (where the image for this post came from) where he is selling a poster and a book for the album. With either of those two purchases you will receive a custom-printed blank CDR along with this accompanying text:

Please note: Due to an ongoing dispute with EMI, Danger Mouse is unable to include music on the CD without fear of legal entanglement. Therefore, he has included a blank CD-R as an artifact to use however you see fit.

The book is chocked full of photography by acclaimed director David Lynch and would make a great birthday present for someone.

You can listen to the album in its entirety at your Link of the Day.

Don't let the somewhat disturbing image or the darkly thematic album title colour your expectation too negatively. This is not a doom and gloom album. It has flavours from all about the spectrum of good music, and, no, this is not a rap album.

Someone over at Digg mentioned how funny it would be if a blank CD-R release like this went platinum.
