I can't remember where, when or how, but decades ago, as a boy, I learned an old superstition that says if you look between a dog's ears, you can see the unseeable — spirits and such. A peephole glance at the dreamtime. There are nights when I want to bend down and peer across his brow. There are other evenings when I dare not, for fear of what I may see.
