Walking behind The Asylum. Note the building on the left. (2005) File Under: Asylum, The; Cemeteries; I Took This Photo! |
When your feet leave the pavement of the new parking lot, it's like stepping back in time as you make your way through the overgrowth and discover a bed of concrete weathered with the strain of age. When the sun is high, if you look closely in the right place, you can see the ghost of a shuffleboard court painted in what is now an almost invisible color of paint. Just past here is where the saplings grow strong and many a rabbit (and one turkey) have been spotted over the years.
Follow the old sidewalk — it will take us where we need to go — but be careful where you step. This is Florida after all and the ground is weak around here. There are several holes scattered about that appear to be from the decrepit underground sewer system for The Asylum collapsing in on itself. A few years ago, me and The Boys ran into a couple of TPD officers one evening, and I ended up giving them an impromptu tour of the grounds. It was late at night, and even though I knew my way around, I fell in a hole that I knew was there, but I did not know it had widened (I had actually filled the hole a couple years earlier with some tree stumps). Ended up wrenching my knee pretty good with some minor soft tissue damage that took several months to fully recover from.
So stay on the path and trust in your tour guide. Tomorrow, we will work our way up to the sharp turn right into the woods, but we'll still have a sidewalk to guide us (for a bit anyways).
