What If You Could Live Forever?

Sunday 07/16/2006 1:05 AM

That's the tagline for the new Darren Aronofsky movie, The Fountain, starring Hugh Jackman.

First, he created Pi. Then he interpretted Requiem for a Dream, a harrowing flick about drug addiction that should be required viewing for any teenagers that need to be shocked about the dangers of drugs.

Now, Mr. Aronofsky is putting the finishing touches on The Fountain, a movie consisting of three inter-connected stories spanning thousands of years about the nature of life, love and everything.

Since Requiem for a Dream, I've been part of the growing chorus of opinions proclaiming Darren Aronofsky to be our generation's Stanley Kubrick. I can't wait to see this movie as another step in his evolution as a great filmmaker.

When the movie Primer came out a couple years ago, I organized a night out to see it with dinner after with a few film buff friends of mine. We had a great time at the flick and an equally good time picking it apart over wine and cheese afterwards at local gourmet shop and eatery Clusters & Hops. I can hardly wait for the fall (October 13th to be exact) when I can plan another get-together to experience an awesome film with friends.

Intrigued yet? If you want, you can get a head start on The Fountain, by picking up the graphic novel that tells a re-interpretation of the same story in comic book form. Originally planned to be released at the same time as the movie, when the film was delayed a couple years ago, work continued on the graphic novel and it ended up coming out late last year. Aronofsky promises that even if you read the graphic novel, though, that plenty of surprises still await you in the theatre.

Until next time, Dear Friend and Reader, smoke 'em if you got 'em.
