All the Pagans In the House, Let Me Hear You Scream

Tuesday 10/31/2006 12:15 PM

Samhain Night. Oidhche Shamhna. It's all Halloween and I like it.

Nothing quite like celebrating pagan rites, rituals and fesitivities in a country founded by a bunch of Puritans who hardly acknowledged Christmas.

Your picture for today is of my nephew Alex and his new friend Herman. Alex recieved Herman in a box from his Uncle Peter earlier in the month. With Herman, was a card with an inscription that went something like this:

When I was a little boy, I went to Disney World and met Herman. He came home with me and has been my friend ever since. I've had Herman a long time and he recently asked me if I knew any other boys that could take care of him for a while. I told him I did know a monkey boy in Ohio who might be interested. Herman said OK and so here you are, Alex. Please take good care of my friend Herman.

Love,
Uncle Peter

When they first opened the box, Alex was quite surprised. He quietly whispered to his mom (my sister Shannon), "Can we take a picture?"

She went to get her camera and, without prompting, the first thing Alex did was lift Herman up so the two of them were cheek-to-cheek. Is that kid a natural, or what?

The afternoon that Herman arrived, Shannon had promised to take Alex to a park. But once he saw Herman and read my card, he had different plans. When Shannon asked him if he was ready to go to the park, Alex told her, "No. I think Herman and I need to spend some time together."
