On Cemeteries

Sunday 03/13/2005 5:56 PM

Today's image marks the beginning of a multi-day discussion of cemeteries.

A lot of people probably go through a morbid infatuation with cemeteries at some point in their life. I certainly did and have returned to it time and time again.

Whether it was the mysterious fenced-in, overgrown plot of land on the edge of the Apalachicola National Forest, helping a girlfriend look for a witch's grave in the Old City Cemetery or visiting Vysehrad in Prague, boneyards have always held a certain fascination over me.

For the moment I'll start with the now — or at least the recently now.

Years ago, when I was walking the dogs at The Greenway, I ran into someone who told me about an old abandoned cemetery hidden in the woods. I knew that whole stretch of forest and fields pretty well, having run along every path I could find and into the woods in many a place, but I had never seen graves or the like. I kept looking for it off and on over the years, but finally gave up.

Well, yesterday, Grandma and I took Sheriff to The Greenway and, in addition to me getting my first sunburn in years, we found the graveyard!

It's pretty dilapidated, but I can't wait to go back with my camera. Most of the graves appear to be for people born in the mid to late 1800's who died in the early 1900's.

Don't forget to check out your bonus Link of the Day (see below).

More tomorrow on a potter's field long in my life and recently rediscovered.
