When I was a teenager, I often puzzled over this fenced-in spot of land tucked away in the woods near our home. (2005) File Under: Cemeteries; I Took This Photo!; Potter's Field |
In my teens, we lived south of Tallahassee on a dirt road in the back corner of a subdivision, with one edge of our property alongside the Apalachicola National Forest. There was another, smaller dirt and sand access road that split the difference between the forest to the east and the private property to the west. I often walked that road to visit the home of my best friend, Jomo Fisher (who is now a developer at Microsoft).
For a long time, I puzzled over this fenced-in spot of land with the peculiar monuments scattered about. With my father being a surveyor, my first thought was that they were somehow used for measuring or marking land.
With the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in Tallahassee, I also knew there were plots of land throughout the county that were used for agricultural testing and experimentation. Maybe that's what it was, I sometimes reasoned when I'd be walking by in the dark watching the monuments in the moonlight.
BTW, today is the two month anniversary of the blog. If you get the chance, light a candle, say a prayer or toast your drink to my little project.
More tomorrow.
