Tanner-Man!

Friday 04/15/2005 10:32 AM

Over the last several months, I have befriended Tanner, a young, enthusiastic Golden Retriever who lives within a couple blocks of me. Whenever I walk or run by his yard, Tanner's head almost always pops up, demanding my attention.

The guy who owns him is named Rocky and has a wife and kids. Rocky probably thinks I'm a bit nutso because I've told him what a great dog he has and I've volunteered our services to dog watch him if they ever travel out of town.

You can probably guess what's going on. Candy was the first verbalize it: "He reminds me so much of Chaunce."

I've never missed anyone or anything like I miss that red dog. It's a dull pain and somedays I'm sure it will be the death of me.

Three years after William Wegman lost his first dog, Man Ray, the one thing he didn't want was another dog. I understand that more and more every day.

Of course, he eventually discovered Cinnamon Girl, who he renamed Fay Ray, and the rest is history.

I wonder if I'll have a Cinnamon Girl and what she'll be like.

"I keep a note tacked to my machine that says, This is the last book you will ever write. That's not some motivational carrot on a stick, but something I truly believe with each book. I don't have a career; I have one last novel, so I have to get it right."

— Craig Clevenger, author of The Contortionist's Handbook, writing on his new blog
