From the Forest (A Conclusion)

Friday 07/15/2005 11:13 AM

A while back I started a new topic called Animals Saving Humans. I told you about Mkombozi, the dog who rescued the infant in Kenya, and then the story of Binti Jua, the gorilla who rescued the boy.

Well, today we're gonna wrap it up with a simply incredible story, the one that inspired this little thread. This is a story that if you made it up and told people they'd poo-poo it with a "that'll never happen."

So are you ready?

Here we go.

In Ethiopia, it is not unusual for a woman to be kidnapped and forced into marriage (the UN estimates that more than half of all Ethiopian marriages involve kidnapping). About 5 weeks ago, a 12-year-old girl was kidnapped. For the next week or so, she was beaten regularly. Day after day, her abductors stayed one step ahead of the police until they finally met their match when three lions came out of the woods and confronted them. The lions chased the men away and then guarded the girl until police arrived.

Sgt. Wondimu Wedajo told reporters by phone:

"They stood guard until we found her and then they just left her like a gift and went back into the forest."
